Letters from Afghanistan

During the Christmas season, the Dragonflies created hand-made cards and decorated cookies for troops stationed in Bagram, Afghanistan, where Charon's cousin LTC Brian Evans was stationed. In January we received a special package from the soldiers, complete with postcards addressed to each child and an American flag that was flown over their camp in Afghanistan. We received a card addressed to the whole class as well:
"Charon Leal and the Dragonflies-

Thank you for the care package . Everyone enjoyed the cookies. I think they were gone in less than an hour! We put the cards up on the wall so that everyone could see them when they came in to work. Everyone really enjoyed them and commented on how nice they were, and how thoughtful you were to think of us.
They have a program here called United Through Reading, where a parent or grandparent can pick out a book and read it on video to their kids. I read a book for you; it is Danny and the Dinosaur. I hope that you enjoy it.
I also got a flag for you. This flag was flown over our camp here in Afghanistan. They made a certificate for you showing the day that it was flown. I hope that you like it.

LTC Brian Evans"

It was amazing to have such a special follow-up to our project from Christmas, and it opened the door for many more meaningful discussions about what our troops do for our country.
